The husband and wife of death
Mictlantecuhtli |
God of dead and king of Mictlan, the lowest part of the underworld. He was the most prevalent god of the underworld. He was equivalent to the Mayan god Yum Cimil. Mictlantecuhtli became ruler of the lowest part of the underworld because story goes, Quetzalcoatl was searching for the bones of the creatures from the previous world of the 4th Sun in order to make mankind. He decides to play tricks on Q and makes him run around 4 times blowing into a shell to take the bones with him. Mictlantecuhtli also digs a huge pit for Quetzalcoatl to fall in, he does and brakes the bones on his fall. Once Q climbed out of the pit and returned with the bones he banishes Mictlantecuhtli to the underworld forever. He is so important to the Aztecs because it is thought that all souls must go through Mictlantecuhtli to contune on to their 4 year journey to extinction.
